Dissociation is a term for the mental processes that occur when someone is trying to remove themselves from their environment, to separate their mind from their body. In the context of a person with Borderline Personality Disorder, these dissociative moments can occur frequently with added stress, and within these moments, they may look empty, hollow and glossed over, as if sleeping with their eyes open (or, at the very least, this is how I have been described when dissociating). This performance will show what a dissociative spell may look like, in content and form, both audibly and theatrically, as the performer will aim to dissociate as much as possible. In any moment where their focus comes to them, they will push it away. They are tasked to “leave the stage without moving a muscle” (disregarding, of course, the many muscles involved in playing their instrument). As they play, the music you will hear will come from nothing. From a nothing; from no thing. It’s as if, after the first sound, the performer’s soul left their body and a simulacrum – a homunculus – continued to play in its undead stead.
